Vụn Art is a social enterprise based in Hanoi, recognized by UNESCO for its work. Its name comes from the Vietnamese word for scraps — vụn — a fitting name for an enterprise built entirely around material that would otherwise be thrown away.
Hanoi has a long history of silk weaving. Workshops across the city produce fabric for garments, and in that process, offcuts are unavoidable — pieces too small or irregular to use in clothing. Vụn Art collects these offcuts rather than letting them go to landfill.
The offcuts are sorted by color and pattern, then cut and pieced by hand by artisans with disabilities. Each panel is assembled one piece at a time, so no two are ever quite the same — the patchwork itself becomes a record of whatever offcuts happened to be sorted that week.
Working with Vụn Art meant building the collection around what the artisans already do well, rather than asking them to work a different way. That's why the Vụn Art Collection — totes, pouches, coasters, and wall art — stays simple in design and honest in its patchwork.
